Strengthening Transatlantic Collaboration in Cardiac Surgery

Posted on February 9, 2026

Following a successful premiere in 2024, a distinguished delegation of German cardiac surgeons, Prof. Conradi and Dr. Gerfer (University Hospital Cologne), Prof. Ensminger (University Hospital Lübeck), Prof. Wippermann (University Hospital Magdeburg), and Prof. Holubec (University Hospital Frankfurt), joined Life Systems representatives for 2025’s Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (MSTCVS) meeting in Traverse City, Michigan.

The visit began at the Comprehensive Care Services (CCS) headquarters, where participants took part in immersive training sessions within a fully integrated, technology-enabled simulation lab. The program combined immersive training with innovative approaches to data collection and analysis. In open discussions, the group exchanged perspectives on current developments in cardiac surgery, joined by leading medical technology manufacturers, including Talis and LivaNova, who presented their latest solutions.

Before heading north to Traverse City, the group made a memorable stop in Frankenmuth, Michigan’s own “Little Bavaria.” With traditional German cuisine and Bavarian beer on the table, the evening offered a warm and familiar atmosphere, a delightful surprise so far from home.

The official reception in Traverse City, hosted by Dr. Andrew Pruitt and Dr. Shelly Lall, set a welcoming tone and helped the German guests integrate seamlessly into the event. The reunion with American colleagues fostered both professional and personal connections, underscoring the shared passion for advancing cardiac care.

The congress program itself delivered valuable insights, particularly through open discussions of qualitative results from cardiac surgery programs, a transparent and innovative format that impressed the visiting surgeons. Under Dr. Pruitt’s moderation, sessions were characterized by thoughtful dialogue and a collegial spirit.

Beyond the formal sessions, an evening barbecue with American surgeons provided the perfect setting for informal networking and idea exchange. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged meaningful conversation, strengthening professional ties and friendships alike.

A key outcome of the visit was the exciting prospect of a “Joint Session” between the Michigan Society and the German Society for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, currently being planned. This initiative aims to deepen collaboration and promote continued knowledge sharing between the two medical communities. The delegation expressed sincere gratitude to CCS and the Michigan Society for their warm hospitality and excellent organization. This trip was more than a meeting; it was a bridge between two worlds of expertise, united by a shared goal: improving patient outcomes in cardiac and thoracic surgery.
